How to prepare to apply for an airline's Cadet Pilot Programme

This is a great question, and our answer is based on our years of experience training hundreds of successful candidates.  Some of this advice comes directly from Brendan, one of our teachers who is also a Senior Captain within Cathay Pacific. Other is advice is from myself, and other advice is from successful candidates and pilots who are working with new second officers.

First steps in preparing for an aviation career

1. Ask yourself if you really are interested in aviation?

It sounds obvious, but the first thing I recommend that you do is find out if you are actually interested in aviation.  Some people might like the idea of flying as a passenger, and playing a lot of golf but when it comes down to actually being interested in aviation many candidates fail this first step. So how can you find out?  

Learning about aviation doesn't cost you anything apart from your time and effort - and the best resource to learn some basic principles of aviation is the aviation theory classes we broadcast on our internet radio station Aviation English Radio.  This will cover the Basic Aeronautical Knowledge stage of a Private Pilot Licence course.  You can also download some very helpful manuals which you can read and study as you listen to the theory classes.  This is completely free of charge and is of the same quality as PPL theory courses that you might see advertised in Hong Kong.  This course is actually based on an FAA syllabus (the organisation that controls flights in the USA) but the rules of physics are equally relevant all over the world. 

2. Find out your English level from AEA (Aviation English Asia)

This is really important. Before you do anything else, contact Aviation English Asia Ltd to arrange an AEPT (Aviation English Placement Test).  Forget your IELTS score, or the fact that you spent 3 years in Australia during your university - the scores are not relevant to the specific skills tested in an ICAO English test.  Aviation English Asia have a lot of experience benchmarking English proficiency against many different types of ICAO test (some ICAO tests are better than others).  You really need to find out where you are on the ICAO scale before you do anything else.  Call us on +852 81799295 to arrange a quick 10 minute telephone consultation and then either the AEPT (a 20 minute face to face test $250 HKD, or AEPT+ a 40 minute face to face test $1000 HKD).  AEA will then give you appropriate feedback and make a recommendation for training.

3. Make sure you can meet the basic requirements

Ask yourself if you meet the basic requirements, e.g. height, qualifications, health, eyesight etc. Before you invest in aviation training it is wise to find out if there are any difficulties that will prevent you from flying as a commercial pilot.  It's best to find out early before heartbreak later on.  We have been very sad other of some candidates that passed all stages of an interview but were unsuccessful in the medical examination because they were too short.  Others were unsuccessful because they had eyesight problems.  An aviation medical should cost less than $2000 HKD.

4. Attend a course with Aviation English Asia

Once you have a realistic idea of your ICAO level you can then plan how much time and effort you need to put into improving your English, e.g. grammar, pronunciation, learning new vocabulary, listening to both aviation-related English and communications between air traffic control.  English is far more important than any other criteria in the selection process.

1. IELTS / TOEIC / TOEFL or general English courses - they don't address the language skills needed in aviation

4. Study trips to Adelaide - expensive and 3 x the actual cost

Be very careful taking advice from flight schools. While some are honest, a large number of flight schools only care about selling you expensive flight training - and they don't care if you succeed in your career or not, or even fly safely in your local airspace. Flight schools very often don't care whether you can use English effectively because after you complete the flight training you won't even be flying in that airspace again. The English standard that flight schools require for flight training is often completely inconsistent with the standards required by a reputable airline.

And the worst thing is that after taking the $1,000,000 HKD that you saved up for flight training you won't have a small fraction of that sum available to invest in Aviation English.

So my advice is come in to see us and get advice on your level and a realistic assessment of how long it will take you to improve your English - complete that course with AEA and only then start flight training.

ICAO AVIATION ENGLISH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY PILOT LICENCE

If you want to hear local airline pilots talk about themselves, their experience and how easy it is to join a cadet programme if you just do their course, then you might find them entertaining. But the reality is that your time would be more effectively used improving your English with AEA and learning aviation theory from proper manuals with guidance from AEA teachers (AEA teachers include senior captains with Cathay Pacific).

While private pilot ground school courses have their place, we have witnessed a lot of candidates who had very low levels of English who had taken "aviation courses", spent thousands of dollars on 8 hours of flight training in Australia, yet had never considered to improve their English first. Basically these organisations are often just upselling high price flight training trips overseas - they don't care about if you are ultimately successful or not. Some of the students who came to us after attending "aviation insights" courses had very unrealistic chances of success yet they had been encouraged to spend all their money on flying in Australia. We think this is unconscionable.

My advice before enrolling on ANY course is to come in to see AEA to get a realistic idea about your level FIRST and a study plan. Then, after starting our Aviation English course, start reading free flight training manuals and if you have difficulty understanding them consider either (a) AEA's Foundation Level English for PPL Ground School course and theory workshops or (b) a ground school theory course if you have lots of time to fill before making your application.

Remember, in most countries you have to do the flight school's own ground school course anyway. With the money you save you should be able to improve your English and afford 10 hours of flying in Australia!

You should start a course as soon as possible and continue to attend the ICAO Aviation English for Cadet Entry Pilots course until you have reached a target level of proficiency where you are comfortable answering such questions. Phrasal verbs are difficult for many English learners because it's difficult to see what the words mean just by looking at them.

So what level of English do I need to pass the ICAO English test?

Some people will tell you ICAO Level 4 or 5, but what does that really mean?

If you think your English is good because you have an A grade in an exam you'd probably be surprised if you failed the ICAO English test.

But that's exactly what happens to many applicants, who have all the skills 'on paper' but have great difficulty in communicating effectively in English - particularly in speaking and listening.

The Hong Kong education system puts too much emphasis on performance in exams, and not enough on actual functional ability - so almost all of the English schools and language centres in Hong Kong will not give you sufficient preparation for the ICAO English test. The simple answer is that (1) for workshops you need to book in advance but you can just turn up on the day without further enrolment, and (2) for classes eg ICAO Aviation English for Cadet Entry Pilots you need to be an enrolled AEA student. To become an enrolled AEA student you need to attend a consultation with us first, and then we will advise you on how long a course you should attend. You can actually choose to do courses from 10 hours all the way up to 400 hours, but you will find that most people in Hong Kong choose to do between 30 and 100 hours depending on their level. This can take anywhere between 7 days and 9 months, depending on the schedule we agree with you in consultation.

We only offer courses that are effective so you should take our recommendations very seriously - all good airlines do.

Definitely not. But we can say that learners who follow our advice do consistently well in ICAO tests. If you are already at good level when you start then AEA courses will help you get a better score. If you are far below your target level then training with AEA will get you significantly nearer to your target level - but probably not enough.

Therefore, if you are mid ICAO level 3 it is best for you to forget about test preparation until you are ready and instead start learning English with us properly. When you are ready you can focus on test preparation.

In order to be allowed to join AEA classes you must attend a consultation in order for us to see whether you are suitable for our courses and have a realistic goal in mind. After your consultation we will contact you. There are classes scheduled at different times throughout the week, and workshops at weekends. It is better to start a class as soon as possible after your consultation because course fees will increase in the future.
