The International Civil Aviation Organisation requires that all flight crew and air traffic controllers achieve a minimum level of ICAO Operational Level 4 English proficiency by March 2011.

Course structure

The ICAO Aviation English Online course is available at four English proficiency levels. 

  • Basic - ICAO Level 2 Lower
  • Beginner - ICAO Level 2 Upper
  • High Beginner - ICAO Level 3 Lower
  • Intermediate - ICAO Level 3 Upper

 

Each skill level course consists of 12 lessons. Each lesson takes approximately 8-10 hours to complete so you can expect approximately 100 hours of English training per level.

In order to find out which course you need first, take the Aviation English Placement Test.  This is a 60 minute online test and optional 10 minute oral test conducted by telephone.  After taking the Aviation English Placement Test you will receive a recommended starting level.

Aviation English course subjects

The course is based on important topics needed for an aviation career.  They include:

  • Meteorology,
  • Physiology,
  • Medicine.

 

You can listen and read interesting articles accompanied by audio recordings of native English speakers, and also practice your understanding of these subjects in tests and quizzes. You can even practice ATC to pilot communication based on real ATC tapes from ICAO and FAA based towers.
